Al-’Arif billah Mullah Ramadan al-Bouti the erudite Shaykh of the Levant of Damascus!
His Birth, upbringing and his application of science:
The Shaykh Alayhi Rahma was born to Kurdish parents the name of his father and grandfather was Omar Murad. His grandfather spent most of his time in the fields. His mother was a good and pious woman and directed him to the study of Islamic sciences and she was able to convince her husband to allow her son to study the Islamic sciences.
His involvement in World War 1:
When the first war broke out Mullah Ramadan Alayhi Rahma returned from a trip after seeking knowledge and settled in his hometown and became an imam of a masjid and was a teacher of the sciences, he saw the danger coming to the Muslim world because of the war. Mullah Ramadan Alayhi Rahma described the attitude of the soldiers and says that they would stay away from sin.
Migration to the Levant!
Causes of the migration:
From among the students that were studying with Shaykh Ramadan Alayhi Rahma, A young man called Yusuf who came and he was crying excessively and told the Shaykh Alayhi Rahma that he had a dream of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam and I saw that you were with him and I was running and trying to catch you both . This may have been one of the reasons as which made the Shaykh Alayhi Rahma have the idea to migrate to the Levant
The Shaykh Alayhi Rahma’s new life in Damascus!
The Rifa’i Masjid:
The Shaykh Alayhi Rahma moved to a city where the Rifa’i mosque was in construction and he eventually decided to live in the same neighborhood as the masjid was a short distance away, the neighborhood’s residents were ignorant and were known for their wickedness. The Shaykh Alayhi Rahma became the Imam of the masjid and eventually started teaching, when it was time for prayer people began coming slowly until the masjid was full of dozens of people at the time of Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Magrib and Isha. The Shaykh Alayhi Rahma was known to be devoted to his prayer and his recitation of the Quran.
There was a scholar who resembled the righteous predecessors such as Hazrat Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani Alayhi Rahma, Hazrat Junaid al-Baghdadi Alayhi Rahma, Hazrat Maroof Karkhi Alayhi Rahma and his name was Shaykh Salah Kiwan Alayhi Rahma who visited the Shaykh Alayhi Rahma and sought blessings from his council, in the meeting they talked about Hazrat Shaykh al-Islam Imam Muhyiddin Yahya ibn Sharaf al- Nawawi Alayhi Rahma , Shaykh Mullah had translated many books of Imam al-Nawawi Alayhi Rahma.
His pious asceticism:
The Shaykh Alayhi Rahma spoke very little and did not backbite; he showed the best of manners when he was visited by guests; he listened to his guests whether they spoke for a short length of time or a long length of time, he did not eat from anyone’s money only that which he processed.
Once someone sent him some money which was from Haram income for his trip from Damascus to Aleppo, he instead refused it and decided to walk to Aleppo. He was a lover of mysticism and spirituality.
His relationship with Mysticism:
He believed that Tasawwuf could only be taken from the book of Allah and the Sunnah, he said that Tasawwuf is a path of discipline and to advance to the in the Sufi way you must follow the Quran and the Sunnah and one must clean his heart from all diseases .
The ‘Ulama and Awliya of Damascus:
The Shaykh Alayhi Rahma once visited the house of Shaykh Hasan Habanaka Alayhi Rahma to inform him about a certain matter; he stayed the night at the residence and they both spent the night praying and discussing various issues.
On Sunday 11th November 1411 the Shaykh Alayhi Rahma suffered from gastrointestinal bleeding in the evening and was visited by a group of doctors and he passed away at the age of 104 on Tuesday 21stNovember 1411 in the afternoon the streets of Damascus were filled with Awliya, ‘Ulama and laymen ; Shaykh Ibrahim al-Jilani Alayhi Rahma led the Janaza prayer, he left behind several sons from among them Shaykh Saeed Ramadan al-Bouti.
